Data qualification - The marketing strategy for 2012

A recent e-marketing survey reveals that contact qualification is THE marketing strategy to adopt for 2012, closely followed by that of developing content. This month we take a look at the importance of data qualification.

Creating and maintaining a qualified proprietary database of contacts is still one of the major problems companies face whether they work in B2B or B2C. Knowing your contacts, their activities, concerns and needs is the only way to be sure you are communicating relevant messages to them.
The multitude of information sources available today provide access to incredible amounts of data, making the volume of information one has to handle more and more time consuming and costly. Data management and data-mining are increasingly necessary to ensure enterprise efficiency.

All data has its own “shelf life” and neglecting the importance of maintaining data may cost a company its vital competitive edge. Companies waste resources by unknowingly using badly structured, out of date, or erroneous data. A typical example being that of a campaign sent to a target that has been wrongly selected due to badly qualified data. This may result not only in costly operational errors (contacts being sent multiple flyers because of duplicated data, or additional expenses being incurred for delivery to invalid contact addresses), but also means inaccurate campaign assessment and analysis, which, in turn may result in the wrong strategic decisions, and missing out on potentially profitable opportunities.

By its very nature a database is dynamic and requires constant maintenance and intelligent segmentation. Statistics show that 70% of company information changes each year: 12-15% of companies disappear and 10-12% change address. Within a typical IT company a contact may change their position every 3 to 5 years and change company every 2 to 3 years. With so many updates and changes to implement, companies often find themselves using different versions of an information field across different departments. Ensuring that all departments within an organization are working with the same data– particularly at an international level – is key to reducing operational costs and to leveraging business value.

For a company to feel comfortable with the accuracy of the decisions made on the basis of their data analysis they need to feel sure that the data they are using is reliable. Accessing reliable market data and using analytical tools specifically designed to meet a particular market requirement (benchmarking, scoring, mirroring, ranking..) enables organizations to feel comfortable with the strategic decisions they make and leaves their staff more time to focus on the essential - achieving their business objectives.
