First Meeting of the European Partnership for Action against Cancer, 7 and 8 December 2009, Brussels



Today, Commissioner for Health Androulla Vassiliou opens the first meeting of the European Partnership for Action against Cancer. The Partnership is aimed at supporting countries' efforts to tackle cancer by sharing information and expertise in cancer prevention, research and control. The aim of this first meeting is to decide on the main actions of the partnership, the structure it will take, and the criteria for participation of various stakeholders and their roles. Participants include patient organisations, health professionals, researchers, academics, health NGOs, National Health authorities, industry and international organisations.
In September of this year, the Commission launched the European Partnership for Action against Cancer at an event in Brussels opened by the President of the European Commission José Manuel Barroso and hosted by Health Commissioner Androulla Vassiliou. This followed the adoption in June of the Commission's Policy paper on "Action against Cancer: A European Partnership". For more information:
